Hi,

I'm sure exactly how to describe what I am looking for - but I will try

I am out of college with three years so still early days in my career. Unfortunately the college I graduated from did not have a career guidance section so I left unsure what to do. For the past 2years I have been working in the same area.

My problem is I am unsure where my current job could led to (i.e. the career path and opportunities to diverse) and also what I should be doing to improve this (maybe future education)

Can anyone recommend someone who could advise me on this. I suppose I feel I don't want to drift and if I had goals I would obtain them. I am just unsure at the moment of what the possible goals are.

Many thanks,

Re: Career Advise

What college did you go to and what did you graduate in to give a better idea?

Re: Career Advice

I have a BA in Business for Blanchardstown IT. I went the route of cert, diploma, degree. My cert and diploma are in Business management from DIT. I am currently working in purchasing.

Re: Career Advice

What are you looking for Tara?

- a Change? - job security? - variety? - people interaction? - more money?

Begin with the end in mind. Career guidance is just that ...guidance. It should help to guide you to wherever you decide to go, but won't tell you what to do with you life.

Re: Career Advice

Try asking yourself where you want to be in the next two years. Do you want to go up the ladder in purchasing or do you want to move to a different department? What exactly do you want to do? When you know this you can see if you are already qualified to do it or take on a part time course to achieve it.

Re: Career Advice

I not looking for someone to tell me what to do. I am looking for guidance as to what possible choices are available, maybe what training I could do, the advantage of the training. I feel at the moment I am just working away but don't know where it's leading. I am the type of person who needs to set goals. I don't want to wake up in ten years time and realise I am still unsure where I'm going

This is what I am looking to do and am therefore looking for professional help with this. Where I work at the moment there isn't a ladder to climb so that's why I'm confused I think

http://www.careersportal.ie/

click on career planning section - takes you through the stages of career planning, you can do most of this yourself, then maybe see a career coach to get specific about moving on.

Do you want to stay in purchasing? What else can you do with a Business Studies degree?

I think you have to get a sense of what motivates and interests you, so some self-reflection required, but try Prospects Planner - it will generate ideas of areas.

It may be a good idea to get a handle on your skills, I like the Windmills Skills card sort, have a go.

http://www.windmillsonline.co.uk/interactive/section_1/subsection_2/page1.html

So having some greater understanding on what motivates you and what skills you have and want to use, will help you gradually become clearer as to what you want from work.
