Looking at relocating to middle east. We have a 05 megane and was thinking it would just be as handy to park it up during the year, and use it when I come back with the children in July & august.
Would we have to pay annual car tax or is there a way we can just pay three months worth?
You pay for the three months you are driving it, when going abroad you put it in storage and when you need to tax it again you fill out this form: https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF100A_en.pdf. Note the section for "Declaration of Non Use" where you fill in how long its been off the road. You get this stamped by a the Gardai and send it off to tax office, requesting to tax car for next three months.
You have to insure the car before you can tax it though so you would also need to check if you can insure a car for just 2 months in the year. To be honest I think you would be better off selling the car and hiring one out for the months you are home - would probably work out more economical.
