Car Insurer adding options not requested?

Having received myself and my husband's RENEWAL quotes for car insurance, the insurer has added one new 'optional benefit' for each of us that we didn't request and didn't appear on our insurance last year. Are they allowed to do this? I spotted it, but I'm sure some elderly person wouldn't and would just pay it without querying it...

What sort of "optional extra"?
if it is something like legal expenses then they can add them once they state this in the breakdown and give you an "opt out" clause (usually a box to tick). We add them to our policies ad enclose the above and the staff also ask the person if they require it.
If it is something like bonus protection then it may be the case that for the same premium they can give you better cover and, as a broker, they are obliged to this this where possible.
