Car Insurance Policy Change

If changing from fully comprehensive cover to basic third party or third party fire and theft will your no claims bonus be affected in any way (ten years plus, no claims) ?
Also, in the scenario of not driving or being off the road for a period of twelve months or so more what would the status of a full no claims bonus be if taking out new insurance at the end of that particular period? Does the policy need to be in operation continuously on an annual basis?
Thank you.

Not sure of answer to first question. I've never heard of a distinction between the two in that way.

For second question, this is the answer for Aviva

Your No Claims Discount (NCD) will be valid in Ireland for 2 years after the expiration of your last policy (assuming that you’ve not been involved in an accident/claim since its expiration while driving under another policy – remember this would also including driving a car under a car rental policy)

Depends on insurers, some allow 12 months break and some 24. Some insurers will be fine if you were a named driver on another policy during the period.

Or, you can reduce your current policy to “Laid Up, Fire & Theft” by taking the car off the road (policy suspension). Some insurers will allow up to 11 months like this, and premium might reduce by up to 75%.

No. But you might find there's no difference in premium, depending on your circumstances.
