This may seem a very naive query but anyway. Driving along the road when the car starts to lose power, next minute theres plumes of white smoke coming from the exhaust & not a budge from the car. The diagnosis is that the car needs a new engine. On the basis that the car is 5 years old & I would do well to get 5-6K for it in pmo, can I get the car written off and make a claim as a NEW engine fitted could cost 3-4K .

Insurance doesn't, to my knowledge, cover general wear and tear.

The insurance gurus here will give you a definitive answer.

Motor insurance is to cover you (and other road users) against accident damage not mechanical failure. Unless you purchased an extended warranty policy with your car, then I'm afraid you're on your own.
