Can't tile under door...

We had hoped to tile our entrance hall, matching the finished heights of living room and downstairs toilet (both of which adjoin).

Unfortunately when we looked at the finished concrete subfloor of the hallway, we found that the builder brought it up to a height just 4-5mm less than the bottom of the front door. Not enough clearance to tile if we have to use that levelling compound

Don't want to use vinyl. Don't want to kango the subfloor just to lower it. We have a good (thick) wood laminate floor in the adjoining rooms but alas when laid on the subfloor this won't clear the door either.

Any way still to tile it?

What is your door made of? If wooden, just take it off the hinges and cut a bit of the bottom so it fits across your floor.

Maybe you should get in touch with the people you bought the door from to see if its possible to shorten it. Might be easier that working on lowering the floor.

You could lower a section around the door to give clearance? I've seen it done before where a 3 ft x 3ft section of the floor is lowered and a matt for wiping your feet is then fitted to the lowered section of the floor as a feature. The rest of the floof is then tiled as normal.

We had a similiar issue. The door will have adjusters to raise\lower it as required so this may solve your problem once you use a thin tile.

Have exactly the same issue with a rationel door at the moment. Was planning on giving them a call to see if they could recommend someone to do the work of shortening the door. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks everyone for advice so far.

I may be a little dumb here but I can't see how this will work. The door surround is a one-piece frame inclusing the sill. Surely shortening the door means there'll be a gap at the ground for rain and wind to enter?

Further, I should have said that the entrance is just a little passageway, say 3' x9' so lowering just a part round an entrance mat might look odd?

Still open to ideas....... First prize is 100 bank shares. Second prize is 200 bank shares......

You need to get a Rising Butt hinge for the door.

A door fitted with same will swing upwards as it opens to clear the floor.
When you are speaking to the Rational people, ask them if it would work on your door.

If not, they may be able to hang the door higher on it's existing hinge.

Was talking to a guy in Rationel during the week, one way of getting a a few mm clearance is to raise the door by using a 6mm alan key on the middle hinge. It is at the bottom of the hinge and if you rotate anti clockwise it should bring the door up a little. It only brings it up a very small amount but may be enough to get you going.
