Can't receive saorview properly with ariel

Hi, I am trying to receive rte with an aerial in my attic.. It's just not happening.. The aerial I am using is a relatively cheap one but was recommended to me by the shop...
I cannot get any signal at all with it...
Presently I am using a little plug in one downstairs and that seems to work most of the time...
Any suggestions for a decent aerial that will pick up this signal.????
 
Have you the aerial facing the right direction....go to Saorview website for right direction for you area

I don't suppose it'd be practical to move the tv to the attic to connect directly to the aerial, to narrow down cable issues like potnoodler has suggested?
 

It depends where you are in relation to where the signal is coming from.You may need a high gain aerial in the attic.
