Can't get rid of some annoying 'malware'

I have a piece of software on my PC that I want to get rid of. It's called Internet Speed Checker and is resistant to the usual efforts. I am not sure how it got here.

When I try to uninstall using Control Panel > Programs & Features, the process doesn't complete.

When I search for the program name, or components, nothing is found. Ditto for the registry.

When I Google for information, the main information returned recommends the steps listed above.

I tried a System Restore, but this did not flush it out.

It's not regarded as a virus, so my AVG scan is not isolating it.

It loads pop-ups in the browser (Chrome), even though pop-ups are blocked. In addition to the pop-ups, it amends the web page to create hyperlinks out of specific words.

The only option I have not tried is to download third-party software, but I am averse to introducing software that could worsen the problem.

Any suggestions ?

If removing it though the usual Control Panel > Programs & Features > Uninstall a program isn't working, try the steps listed here.

Revo Uninstaller and Malwarebytes are both 100% kosher and won't add to your problems; indeed I keep the latter installed on my own machine and run it once a month or so. It often picks up on things that antivirus programs miss.

crapcleaner also has an uninstall feature if the doctor's advice doesn't work. It's also a great utility for keeping your pc clean imo.

Very good. It and Glary Utilities (which also has a built-in malware scan, although I doubt it's as thorough/efficient as the more specialised Malwarebytes).

Prevention is always better than cure.

Malwarebytes is the way to go. I have been using it for years, never let me down, definitely reaches into areas others can't reach

Malwarebytes seems (fingers crossed) to have done the trick. Thanks for your help with this.
