Cancelling health insurance midway

Hi,
I am due to renew my health insurance policy and as i am currently unemployed, I am going to pay for it myself. I expect to be employed again hopefully in a few months time, and hopefully my employer will pay for the health insurance premiums as a benefit in kind.

My question is with the above scenario, would it be better to pay for the insurance on a monthly direct debit rather than at one go. My only problem with this is that with the direct debit method, I have to pay an extra 3% on the premium. What are the penalties for cancelling the policy midway when it has been paid for in full and then having the employer take over the payments?

Thanks.
