I've always wondered about this one...

If you pull out of a sale. Before contracts have been signed for example. Do you pay the Solicitor?

I know you get the full booking deposit back from the Auctioneer.

well if they read the contract a few quid would not be out of order

I was wondering about this too. We're about two weeks away from signing contracts and handing over contract deposit on a house in a new development that won't be ready for months. But we're starting to get a leeeeetle cold-feetish and wondering if we're rushing it. But since we've appointed the solicitor and all, would we have to pay him if we pulled out? The majority of the work is done before closing, right? I don't mind paying for work done - that's only fair - but I really hope if we do change our minds we won't have to pay out a few grand for word done!! Anyone gone through this?

We had a house deal fall through (not our fault) and our solicitor charged us nothing. When we finally managed to get a house we obviously went back to that solicitor. I think if a deal falls through at the early stages a solicitor may be willing to waive costs in order to keep goodwill and future business.
