I was wondering if you can use your sky box once you cancel your subscription to view certain channels? We are moving house and will bring out box with us but don't want to create new sub as we'll be moving in 6 months again..any thoughts

Yes you can use it to pick up the FTA channels. To see what channels you will have just pull out your card and the ones left are what you'll get. Plus you can tune all the ITV's and channell 4 into other channels.

the main ones you will get are bbc 1,2,3 & 4... itv 1 ,2 ,3 & 4... c4 , e4 ,more 4 and film 4... sky news... and lots and lots of crud..

must you use the sky dish aswell or will another dish work to receive the signal?

cheers Jhegarty, must give it a go...i'll just point it in the same direction as the other sky dishes and she what happens..do you have to be very precise?

yes, you can pick up a sat meter on ebay for ~€10 ... don't bother trying it without one....

Do the channels appear in the normal list, ie, channel 101, 102 onwards?
Or do they all appear under the Services list?

Would find it annoying to surf in this way, 10 clicks of the remote to change channel.

with the UK EPG (the default on the box) most of the free stuff is up the top....

You won't get Irish channels without a Sky sub. Might not be a great loss though

You can get them (bar Channel 6 which is cable only?) via terrestrial aerial though.

True - assuming OP can/wants to use an aerial.
And, yes, Channel 6 is only available via sat or cable. There'll be tears
