Can roles which are the same be distinguished between for redundancy

Hi

In a department where all roles at the same level across different teams are treated as the same role, i.e. associate on Team A is same as associate on Team B - can they be differentiated for redundancy, I.e. Team A is made redundant on a compulsory basis and Team B remains in place with no option of voluntary redundancy ?
Or must it be offered to all?
Can some roles be ringfenced even though it is maintained all along for hiring that the roles are the same at their respective level and especially for moving people between teams when they don't want to - they're told it's the same role so you can't argue you're role has been changed?

Thanks in advance

People don't get made redundant, roles do (at least that is the legal theory) so if teams are being reduced and they are all doing the same job then other criteria can be applied. For example, if Team A were servicing one customer and that business was lost and Team B were servicing a customer with a long term contract then potentially Team A could be in scope. Likewise Last in, First out is a legally acceptable way of selecting people for redundancy.
