I'm posting on behalf of a friend who is a self employed sole trader. Their business is pretty much a non entity at the moment, I believe they are also in receipt of Social Welfare assistance. They have a tax liability with Revenue which they cannot pay off in one lump sum. Revenue looking for a down payment which my friend does not have. Every cent they earn is being used to pay off their mortgage.
They are paying Revenue a token payment each week. Liability approx 18k. They have every intention of paying said liability back but it will just take a lot longer than expected.
Can Revenue force them to cease mortgage payments so they can clear their tax liability?
