Can I sell shares to a friend without using a stockbroker?

A friend of mine asked this question. His father wants to sell some shares in FBD and the son wants to buy them.

Do they have to use a stockbroker?

I advised calling FBD to find out who the Registrar is and to get the paperwork from them.

My gut feeling is that the paperwork is complicated and they might just be better off calling Campbell O'Connor and asking them to do the deal on a matched bargain basis.

Registrar should be able to help.

There's a simple transfer form to complete and 1% stamp duty to pay to Revenue.

Mind you, there are more than 1 class of FBD share. Some are shareholders in the plc and others in FBD trust.

Thanks Ravima

I had got it into my head that it was a complicated business with plenty of paper. Have you ever done it yourself?

No, but I understand that if registrar won't help, if you are a client of a stockbroker, they might be able to put the deal through at a very reduced cost
