I am currently working part time, i was put on a short week as this is what i wanted and it suited the company at the time. Now a few months later i am asked to return to full time work. This really does not suit me and the company know that, can they force me to do this?

Do you have a contract? If so, what does it say?

Other than that, it sounds like you were employed as a full time member of staff and that the company accomodated you by offering p/t.

Without knowing full details, it might be that not working full time would in breach of your contract/terms of employment.

I am with the company 5years and don t have a contract, i was put on part time as it suited them also. Was told that only they have to pay me redundancy then i would have been let go altogether. Sometimes i feel like they are playing games with me, very frustrating.

Thanks for reply

Firstly your employer is obliged to give you a statement of terms of employment under the Terms of Employment act. He is supposed to have done this within 2 months of you starting, I assume from your posts, this has not happened?

Secondly, when you moved to part time, did you sign any agreement with the company.? If so, then the terms of such an agreement would take effect.

If no agreement was signed and your company has no policy on part time working, then I suggest you contact the Citizens Advice Bureau for advice

The amount of people workign fulltime under no contract is larger than you think. Several professions really don't have contracts (medical secretaries etc).

There was another thread like this a while ago.

Kathymarge, you were employed initially on a full time basis I take it? Meaning that you accepted the job knowing that it would be full time?

Then, at your request, your employer agreed to part time - that it may have suited your employer is irrelevant really, just a happy coincidence for them - but it was what you wanted.

I don't think your employer is being unreasonable by requesting that you return to full time and thus fulfilling the original role that you accepted.

Unless they agreed to permanent part time or something?

Have I got this all wrong?

By the read of your post, you were originally employed full time, then got part time as your request, now company needs you back full time, which is simply what you agreed to when you accepted this job.
Employer's request is more than fair IMO. I am sure 1000s of people would love to get a permanent full time job.
