Calculating when in multiple PRSI classes

Hi there,

I'm finding it very difficult to make my way through what happens if you are in different PRSI brackets.

Last year, as I see it, I earned in three different classes:
  1. Part-time teaching with a university (Class A) - Medium but inconsistent
  2. Self-employed work via internet (Class S) - Largest Amount and consistent
  3. Family employment (Class M) - Small and consistent

I'm trying to work out the implications for my tax with these.

My question:

  • Class M requires no PRSI contribution so are these earnings taken away from what I calculate my PRSI on?

USC and income tax is fine as they work off the total amounts. I'm just having trouble working out how much PRSI! My confusion is that most guides assume that you are in a single bracket and just work from that.

Cheers,
Z

PRSI is computed at source so your employer would compute that for you if its due for a month its deducted if not then it won't.
Class M is Zero.
So all you need to worry about is the class S on your self employed income which will be calculated on the Form 11, the other 2 employments are not relevant as the PRSI on those does not appear on the Form 11.

Hope that helps.

Ah, perfect. I think I understand now.

So it's (PRSI of income at class A) + (PRSI of income at class M) + (PRSI of income at class S) = (Taken care of by employer) + (Zero) + (Stuff I need to take care of) = Total PRSI

Thanks very much.
