You don't have to get a survey or snagging done on any property but it is usually a good idea to do one or the other. If you are familiar with construction and know what to look for (or know somebody who is) then you could do it yourself. However if you are more likely to pick up on cosmetic issues and overlook potentially more serious (e.g. structural) issues then you would be better off with a professional surveyor for snagging or possibly even a detailed structural survey (even if it is a new property). If in doubt opt for the latter particularly since the cost should be small relative to overall cost of buying and especially relatively to the cost of missing something significant and having to put it right at a later date.
