Can some one help with my pension questions.

My wife just started teaching at 40. She did a 4 yr degree and a 2 yr masters. I’m assuming she will work till she is 65. That’s will be 25 years in service 23 of them contributing to the superannuation scheme.

1. How many actual years contribution can she buy back ?
2. How many notional years contribution can she buy back?
3. Why is the former cheaper than the latter?
4. how can if be any different than if she had paid whilst working?
4. is there full tax and prsi relief on both types of buy backs?

If she pays the extra 1.5% for the spouses & childrens pension:
4. do I receive a pension from it? – if so how much?.
5. Do I or the kids get anything if she dies before retirement?
6. Do I or the kids get anything if she dies after retirement?

7. Why do the qualifications matter?
8. Does she get the state pension as well as the teachers pension.
9. Why would she bother with a private AVC scheme - whats the avantage?

Any help is appreciated.

looks like a good place to start.

The DES published a green book called something like "Superannuation - your questions answered" a few years ago. Ring them and get them to send it out. Alternatively, when you ask for an application form to join the scheme I think they automatically send it to you.
