Bullying in the workplace?

Hi guys, Happy New Year to everyone!

My brother is having difficulties in work, he is working in a factory and has been employed there for maybe two years ish, lots of incidents, employers always sweep things under carpet which causes him great distress and things built up and up and everyone in there are a pile of bad moods etc etc, you get the drift, not your ideal working environment but now a major one crops up - a co employee of his, went to the employers and told them that he had said something serious and he was called up for it and spoken to by managing director! Now if there is one thing, he is the most truthful guy ever and has no problem speaking his mind, so if he said it, he would admit it, but he didn't. He is at his wits end and has been back to the management asking them who said he did and what were they going to do about it. The management are trying to brush this one away too and have even said to him "we don't know who to believe". He has been told by another co employee who did say it so he knows full well and the culprit has guilt about face but my brother doesnt want to confront this guy, he wants the management to sort it! They told him they cannot tell him who said it and they will sort it ............. but haven't and won't!

Its like management are creating problems, dragging him up and then saying forget it! This is surely not on.

Any advice would be appreciated. Would you call it bullying? This is not the first time he has been called up in the wrong and half of the management admit they are wrong, the rest bury their heads. Management I ask, huh!

Anyway, is he entitled to know from them who told lies about him??

Thanks guys x

Tough one, ideally mgmt and HR should be helping out here but sounds like they're not. There should be written procedures on discipline, how to make a complaint (bullying, harassment etc.) and how complaints are dealt with. Have a look at citizens information for bullying. Bullying is a very serious matter & I believe there is specific legistlation around it. If an allegation of bullying is made, a company can get into alot of trouble for not investigating it or not handling it properly.

Its a rotten situation to be in, work place bullying can be soul destroying especially when employers dont take it seriously. Your brother should keep a written record of everything that has been happening ie dates, who said what etc and be careful about who he discusses this with.

Good luck

Was in a situation 2 years ago where I was bullied by a co worker - I had spoken to the department head and my manager (who was witness to the events) - ended up leaving - as I was told nothing would be done - I was contracting - he was permanent. Best thing I ever did was leave the place:)

Thanks guys for your input, its a very distressing situation. I will talk to him over weekend and suggest talking advice in the matter.

A x
