Hi I am the manager of a community based service run by a voluntary committee. The buisness that we run has to close for a maintance job for 2 days . It would be unsafe to be in the building. Some of the committee want to get the staff to owe back the hours given off on the day or not pay them at all. I feel people will have to be paid as it not their fault they cannot work on the day. But would it be fair to expect the staff to work back the hours. We are open 45 hours per week and we would have the option to do 3 hours extra for a few weeks or as it is once off should they just have the days and thats it.

????. You can just force them to take the two days as holidays. This would be standard practice in many industries.

I would be most unimpressed if I was "forced" to take holidays due to my workplace being unsafe. In the intrest of staff morale I would pay them and give them the extra days off provided you can afford to do so. If you can not afford it then explain that to the staff as best you can. LS.

But a lot of places "force" you to take annual leave if the office is closed ( eg over the Christmas) - so can't see any issue with that.

Yea, but you know about Christmas when you take the job. I just think it is unfair, not sure about the legalities. People do plan their holidays in advance, a bit of consideration wouldn't go amiss.

The legalities are that it is up to an employer when an employee is allowed to take holidays.

we do have 2 weeks closed in the year outside of christmas holidays so people have just a few floating days which most people have either days booked or taken at this stage. I suppose working the days back is the fairest way but some staff are complaining that this is not of their doing. We are only leasing the building and had hoped the work would be done when we are closed but they were unable to get it done at this time

I work in the voluntary sector and i would see it as being different to a business environment where obviously its about making profit. On the occasions that we have had to close, also for maintenance, it never even entered our heads to expect staff to take holidays. It was not there doing, they were available and willing to work and i think for staff morale it was the better choice to just give them the time off. I think you get it back in performance and flexibility.
