At this point in time it is normal to expect people under 30 to speak English to at least A2 level in Switzerland, which means they can conduct their everyday life in English. Kids normally have three languages towards the end of primary school - the language of their region, one other national language plus English. In addition when learning English they are expected to have an understanding of the British Isles culture - they spend about 6 months studying the culture and English as spoken in each of the 5 countries. They are expected to be able to recognise where the person speaking comes from and be able to discuss everyday topics from that country. I've had countless questions on various events in NI, SF, Shoot To Kill etc... Yes there are kids in our village who know a lot about people such as Ian Paisley, Bernadette McAliskey, Liam Mellows, Liam Tobin etc....
My daughter's English teacher tells me that English is one of the easiest subjects to teach in school because all the kids are highly motivated to learn and will seek her out to get additional homework etc.. Even apprenticeships here include a requirement to study a foreign language as part of the deal and that is most often English. I'm always amazed at how easily the tradesmen I have working on the house will switch to English when he hears one of our family speaking English.
I always get a laugh out of one of my daughter's friends, they have been talking English together for sometime now to help her improve. And it has worked so well that despite the fact she has never been to Ireland, she speaks with a Mayo accent and even comes out with phrases like "How's the craic?"
