Bookkeeper has done a runner

Hi All,

Hoping for a bit of advice. Last year I sold an Irish property and used a bookkeeper to prepare and submit the tax returns to the revenue on my behalf. (I’m non resident for over 6 years now.) all sorted and no issues until earlier this year. The 2017 tax return was calculated and prepared but she couldn’t lodge it at the time so told me to contact her in 2018 to get it done and get me deregistered for tax.

I have called, emailed, text her multiple times to no avail.

My questions are:
1. Do I have any recourse?
2. Where can I find a cheap way of getting this (already prepared) tax return submitted?

Cheers for any help!

Hello,

Did she email you a draft of the return? Perhaps she will resurface nearer the deadline date for submission of the return, that being 31/10/2018 ( later if filed on line) ..

You could file the return yourself via ROS. This is an online official site. There is a registration process which takes a bit of time .. or do a paper return.. it’s pretty straight forward.. ( in my opinion!)

Hire a properly accredited accountant if this is worrying you. Hiring a fly-by-night bookkeeper to do a Capital Gains Tax computation is asking for trouble, particularly as you're non-resident and not exactly in a great position to defend yourself if it turns out that their work is as about as reliable as their after-sales service.

Hi Mary55555, yes I have a copy of the draft.. hoping she will pop up again. I have lots of things on my plate st the moment so I don’t really have the time to try to decipher the form

Appreciate the help! Fingers crossed she pops up
