Hi folks, Discovered a few dozen bluebottles in our sitting room yesterday, I killed and disposed of them and then scrubbed the room, We were baffled by this. This morning about another dozen were there and they seem to be coming through the chimney, I have blocked it off today, Anyone any suggestions on what to do , I am assuming a dead bird is causing this.

There is a dead animal somewhere ok.

It would be almost impossible to shut them out.

it could under a floorboard. You will have to sniff out the carcass and remove it.

yes, its a dead animal or bird that they are hatching from or attracted to. had this issue a few years back in a rented house. saw a rat outside in a utility shed where we had freezer and washing machine, we put down poison. there were holes from pipework in the shed. a good few days later bit of a pong in house hall, smell wafting up from under floorboard beside a radiator. bluebottles in kitchen. we sprayed flykiller a few times to kill the bluebottles and after a week or two the smell was pretty much gone.

There is a limited amount of food in a single carcass.
Its undergoing a natural process of decay and spawning of flies by the sounds of things.
It's not nice but can't last forever - sweeping your chimney regularly is the obvious advice to consider.

I was just about to paot my topic when I saw this one. I have a problem with lots of flies swarming in my garden. I don't have any animals so not to do with their waste, they are not swarming near bins or ponds or the usual things. They are clustering under the branches of a copper birch tree. Does anyone know why they might be doing this and how might I get rid of them. They're disgusting. They are the normal house fly type. There are also lots of blue bottles in my flower bed, I have read on other sites that this might be to do with peat moss?
