Bizarre communication from Revenue

Hi,

I'm self-employed and made a tax return earlier this month. I then received an acknowledgment of the payment that indicated no problems. Now I've received a communication from Revenue that I don't understand at all - can anyone help?

Basically, it says - "You have been assessed to tax for the above year as follows. Tax due per your calculation - 0.98"

What on earth does this mean? That I underpaid by 98 cent? If so, shouldn't they be showing me their calculations? And how am I supposed to pay it anyway?

PS When is the Revenue going to join the 21st century and allow us to make queries by email?

I think they assess you to the nearest cent but only collect euros so that you now owe them € 0.98

Their system is like that - a bit erratic at times.

Short answer, no you don't have to pay the 98 cent! You'll see (I'd expect) that it's a computer generated letter, not hand signed, they get printed and sent out in batches.

You could always ask them how much it cost the tax payers of Ireland (and the IMF) to send you a letter for 98cent!

In fairness, it was an electronically generated message communicated through their website - sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Are you sure it's genuine ? Don't part with any information in reply till you know for sure. Why not just send in a letter asking them for clarification ? Snail mail it may be but it's effective and shows a full paper trail and you will know it's genuine.

Whoa now, let's not be getting carried away! The guy has, by the sounds of it, submitted a F11 online along with a payment. He received acknowledgement of the payment. He has now received, presumably into his inbox on ROS online, a notice of assessment, showing the euro-odd balance, which is not going to be collected. He hasn't suggested at any point that the correspondence requested him to do anything, much less disclose any info... OP if you're still around you might confirm one way or the other?!

Yes, don't worry - it came via my ROS inbox and is definitely genuine. But no harm in checking.

You mix me up with someone who is

similiar story with me but not self employed, PAYE tax return done on line week ago or so. Every year I ask for non paper communications and repayments into bank account. every year I get paper communications and cheques back but this year it takes the biscuit for mis-management of affairs. Tax return balancing statement showed revenue owed me 4 euro, cheque to be issued shortly. I rang them and asked that they just add this 4euro to credits for next year or even just don't bother refunding it - after all they have written off almost 200e another year for me. They couldn't do that - cheque has to be issued apparently. So someone got paid to handle the paperwork for computer generated letters (2 letters), cheque and postage for 4euro - and I've repeatedly asked for non paper communications.
