Bird stuck in air vent

I have discovered a bird (starling I think) in the air vent in my livingroom. The vent guard on the outside is cemented into the wall so taking that off is not really an option.

I took off the vent guard on the inside but the bird keeps disappearing. I really dont want to leave the vent open all day/night as I have seen the mess birds create when they panic.

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting rid of it.

I don't know how he got in other than guessing he got in through the attic and fell down through the cavity wall.

How about going all Wile E. Cyote on it? Remove the grille in the room and put a cage with some food in it against the hole. You'll need some means of closing off the cage once the bird is in there though.

Other alternative is to break out the outside grille and then replacing with a new one and making good any damage to the plaster.

other routes i could take would be to send a cat in and if that does not come back out to send in a dog etc...

with regard to taking the grill off the outside, I have considered it but would have no way of knowing if it left or just died in the wall...

The presence, or lack thereof of a strong odour within a couple of days will answer that one.
