Big Tax Bill

Hi,

I'm new here and did do a bit of a search but I'm not even sure of the terminology I should be using to find my answer so maybe you guys can help.

My dad got a call today from his accountant saying he has a euro 9600 bill and he has to pay by Friday. He heard before the end of last year that he had a 4600 bill which he had arranged to pay off by the week. Today it seems to have been bumped up.

It seems to have come about because my dad gets widows pension aswell as his work. Fair enough, he has to pay his taxes. Pain in the ass but it is a reality.

My question is about his accountant. What are his responsibilities here? My dad gave him details about his earnings yet he has had concequtive years of big tax bills. Didn't my dad use a service and the service wasn't good enough?

My dad in his politeness said thanks very much, i'll deal with this myself to the accountant. The reply was don't be like that, we tried to get all the information from you. This is not true. we don'y have any correspondance for that.

Can anybody offer any advice? Thanks for you help. I hope I haven't broken any ules here.

Unless the full and entire facts are offered it is impossible to offer an opinion. Bear in mind that Accountancy firms, and even the Revenue do make mistakes. Regardless the firm of accountants are likely to have Insurance for instances like this.

If your father think that his advisors have made a mistake, then he had better get his papers together and take a trip to his solicitors.

It is not clear to me, did your father provide the accountant with full details of the pension or not at the time the accountant was preparing the tax returns and calculations?

When your Dad got extra income that seems not to have been taxed why did he not put money aside to pay the tax if he is self employed?

Surely the Accountant was aware that your Dad is a widower. Isn't it odd that widows pension was never mentioned when finalizing the returns.

I would also be checking the revenue figures of the widows pension paid as they never seem to match with the actual amount paid by SW. A certificate of the amount paid for each of the relevant years is available on request from SW
