Best way to dress windows??

I'm not too keen on curtains and would wecome any comments you may have on roman blinds v's roller/wooden slat blinds. Want to keep the walls/blinds as neutral as possible and to add colour through accessories. Anyone else in the same line of thinking...or am i alone on this one??? regards J
 
I have plain white roller blinds up that I got in Ikea for about 8 euro each, they look really good giving a fresh contempory finish. You could buy one of each blind and try holding it up to the window to see which style suits your room and return the product you are not keeping. Best of luck, Priscilla.
 
I have wooden venetian. I love them, but they are not without flaws:

1. Light - they really do keep out light, great at night, but for areas with small (er) windows, eg halls, downstairs toilet, kitchen - we really notice it's a lot darker than if the blind is pulled up completely.
2. Dust - my heart is broken. Dust just sticks to each slat and I don't have a time or patience to dust/clean them regularly. Just closing them and swiping them with a duster doesn't do the trick. Also - these venetian blind cleaners (that clean 3-5 slats at once) do not live up to expectations.

I love them but they are not maintenace free.

Would I get them again - yes....but then ..I would chose to buy a cleaner husband to go with them :)
 
I got shutters for some of my windows and absolutely love them. Try Supreme Shutters [broken link removed]. They can be a tad expensive but are worth it as they are like a piece of furniture that you will have for a long time. Matthew is the contact there who is extremely helpful and professional. They do a wide range of colours and materials.
 
I have one or two venetian blinds and they are awful dust collectors.
I also have Roman blinds in the bedrooms and I love them, so neat and they only take half the fabric normal curtains need so you can be a bit generous when buying good quality fabric. They also seem to suit modern houses very well. Just one word of warning - if you are using blinds of any type make sure small children cannot access the cords, toddlers have strangled themselves on them.
 
I prefer the simple understated look you're talking about, but bear in mind that you will lose all of the insulation that you get with curtains. I've double glazing and it's amazing the difference that curtains make.

I've been considering going with a roller blind and then curtains for the winter - but I could take them down for the summer.
