Best way to convert dollar cheque to euros

Hi

if I have a cheque in dollars, what is the best way to convert into euros while avoiding the expensive fx rates the banks offer?

I've looked at TransferMate and CurrencyFair, but both only support wire transfers rather than cheques.

Perhaps you could ask the drawer to wire transfer the dollars to your account at Currency Fair or TransferMate, and you tear up the cheque (or return it to drawer)

I've thought about that but they are requesting an original notarized letter of instruction in the post to do this, which is extra hassle I'm hoping to avoid.
