If you're a PC user the simplest programme to use for this would probably be
PhotoDVD - you can try it for free for a trial period. You don't get a huge amount of editing control with it but it works well and the end product looks good.
I wouldn't be a big fan of Windows Movie Maker (actually, I HATE it!) but others like it - so if you're not happy with PhotoDVD give it a try.
I'm sure there is lots of similar software to the above but they're the only PC programmes I've used.
If you're a Mac user then
iMovie will do the job - it's similar to Movie Maker, but 100 times better.
I prefer the older version of iMovie (ie 06 HD, rather than the 08 version) - it's available as a free download from the Apple site (but obviously for Mac users only).
Do you have any home movie clips relating to the birthday boy/girl? They look brilliant when edited in with photos on a DVD - and it
really isn't difficult with Movie Maker or iMovie, trust me!
Best of luck with it.
