hiya's .....

planning on treating a concrete floor on a cottage we are moving into . firstly i will lift the old carpet , tape a bag to the floor and leave for a couple of days . i plan to lift and check underside for moisture . if so , here is what im planning .....

three coats of heavy duty moisture cured polyurethane sealant . 3 coats in total with 4 hours between each . finally finnish off with some self levelling compound ! ......

is this my best approach ? i would also love to insulate the floor some how but im not sure if there is anything extremely thin that i could put down prior to treatment that would be worth the grief !

any comments greatly appreciated .....

to be honest pulling up the floor and relaying it with insulation and Radon/DPM is the best way to carry out this work. You could look at an underfloor system while you were at it.

Your system is a short term solution for what could be a problem down the line. Sika and others make systems similar to that as stated by you but they will not last indefinately and you will loose a masive amount of heat through the floor if uninsulated.

Agree that best solution is breaking out the floor. If you really don't want to do that - could you put down 40ml of Kingspan extratherm, followed by damp proof barrier, then 40ml self levelling screed ?

I had a problem with a very damp floor. It was visibly wet within minutes of rain.

I put down 5 coats of liquid dpm. Then finished with floor levelling compound. Then tilled over the top.

All is still prefect 6 months later. No sign of any damp getting through.
