Bed under window???

Hi,

Has anyone got their bed under a window. I am having difficulty with the layout on my new room. 2 of the walls have doors in them and the other has a big horrible chimney breast on it.

So my only options seems to be to put the bed under the window

Would people reccommend it or is it a big no no??
 
No problem at all. I recommend a headboard though. Planning on doing the same myself. I do have one wall I could put it against but if I put it against the window wall, the length of the bed goes along the length of the room so I think it uses the space better.

If you're talking about putting the 'head' of the bed under a window, I see it is very popular in design pieces in magazines and American homes. Slim
 
I presume you have double glazed windows if its a new house so then you won't have any draught problems.
 
Is it possible to make the chimney breast wider and put headboard at that side...something that i am planning on doing as part of main bedroom upgrade over the next few weeks
 
The only problem might be light coming through. I find it hard to sleep if the room is not completely dark so it might be best to get heavy and wide curtains.

I had thought of extending the chimney breast but it would then protrude out further than one of the doors on the adjacent wall.

Chlipps, do you mean extend the chimney wide enough to accomodate the bed or wide enough to accomodate the bed and lockers.
The latter would leave a small alcove than could be hard to fill and the former makes it difficult to sit the lockers nicely.

Perhaps blinds and curtains or roman blinds could be an idea, to make sure its dark and draught free.


Its surprisingly difficult to find a solution.
 
If you want to keep the window open at night as most people do, then you'll get a draft and this often leads to chills and colds. Personally I would avoid this at all costs.
 
I had a room with a chimney breast like that before - I had planned to extend it with a sheet of mdf or something like that, paper or paint it to blend in, and then put small shelves for books etc in the nook that was created. I never got around to it though and just had the bed there anyway.

At the moment I have my bed under a window, which is open almost all the time - I love the fresh air coming into the room, no problems with chills or colds yet, but only did this a few months ago so may reconsider once the colder weather hits us.

Changes - you should try it with the bed under the window for a few nights before you make any permanent alterations. You may love it or you may hate it for reasons that nobody has mentioned here, but you'll never know until you try.
 
Changes... i am going to make it wide enough for bed and the two bed side lockers.. In my house, if i close off lower part of one alcove just up to height over the head board then i can fit bed and 2 lockers... the remaining alcove above that will be for a shelf or maybe light feature, yet to be finalised.. Lucky in that the alcove is relatively shallow.. without checking i think it is about 200mm..I plan to make this a permanent change with single sheet of plasterboard, re-route skirting etc.. etc.. The problem in current set-up is that bed is on opposite wall and just barely enough space for bed plus one locker, with door hitting the locker.

Dubgem has good point there, why not move the bed under window for a month and see how it goes
 
only problem with a bed under the window would be if children were to climb on the bed and then fall out the window.
is the bedroom on the ground floor?

Live in Monaghan so quiet yes but heavy sleeper no :(

I just can't believe anyone can sleep in a room without some ventilation. Maybe people leave the wall vents open instead?
