BBC2 & Ch4 reception problem

Hi

We can get the Irish stations together with BBC1 & UTV - although these two are snowy, but watchable. We cannot however get BBC2 or Ch4 at all. Is there any reason why this would be?

Our dilemma is that we can get 'free to air' up and running for about €350 but if an aerial/TV guy was to cost near to this then there is little point in getting someone to look at this - and I'd imagine that if e.g. a new aerial was needed, together with labour/time costs, overall price could get close to €350 maybe.

So, how much would people reckon it would cost for a TV guy to 'have a look' and does anyone know of a good reason why we should get BBC1/UTV but not BBC2/Ch4 at all?

Thanks

How are you receiving these - e.g. set top aerial, loft/roof mounted aerial, cable etc.?

I don't really understand the point that you are making here. Perhaps you can clarify?

You should probably look at boards.ie too:

Thanks for the quick response.

It's a rooftop aerial.

The point I was trying to make was that it might be more cost effective to forget about solely terrestial TV altogether if a 'free to air' package is only going to cost us €350 - but then again, I'm not completely sure of likely costs for perhaps fixing existing aerial - or replacing if necessary.

Still find it strange that we can get BBC1/UTV but nothing at all for BBC2/Ch4

I'll have a look at the boards forum too then.

What is the aerial pointing at - UK transmitter (where? NI, Wales, etc.?), deflector, etc.? Who installed it and did it ever work for all stations? Maybe it's not the correct orientation/polarisation/band etc. for all stations. The possible reasons for problems are endless and hard to pinpoint without a lot more info.

You can get FTA satellite systems for a lot less than €350 depending on what you're looking for and whether you can DIY install it or not. Note that you will still need an aerial for Irish terrestrial broadcasts (RTE1/2, TG4, TV3) and you will not get C4 just yet (although it may be available FTA soon once their contract with SKY runs out). You should definitely check out that boards.ie forum and maybe www.lyngsat.com for information about what FTA channels are available (you will most likely want to concentrate on Astra 1 at 19.2E and/or Astra 2/Eurobird 1 at 28.2E).

Don't really know anything about this - aerial came as is with 25 year old house we bought last year.

Would not attempt DIY installation - was basing price on approx. €250 + €100 to install

OK - Didn't actually realise this.

...we will with the FTA option we're looking at ;)

Will do - thanks.

Could be damaged or never worked or something. Any chance of asking the former occupants?

www.satellite.ie have systems for €299 including installation. Check boards.ie for other similar offers.

RTE (not sure about TG4/TV3 - check www.lyngsat.com - and I think CH6 is only available on cable) are only available on the SKY platform to SKY subscribers or former SKY subscribers using their SKY setup as a FTA system. Basically the broadcasts are encrypted and you need a SKY viewing card to see them. This may change in the future but that's the de facto situation.

How? The previous point also applies to C4 unless you are talking about a non satellite UK FreeView digital terrestrial system or something which could be hit and miss here in Ireland depending on location.

Double check on boards.ie to make sure before shelling out for FreeView digital terrestrial equipment. Bear in mind that such equipment may not work with whatever digital terrestrial system might eventually be deployed (as opposed to being trialled as it is at the moment) here in Ireland.

Oh. Hadn't considered that at all. Any likely time frame for digital terrestrial in the republic?
