Based on their IP addresses, how can I find out who is viewing my site?

Hi,
I use webalizer to view the usage statistics on my website. Aside from all other statistics it shows me the IP addresses of the vistors to the site. It would be useful (from a marketing/sales follow-up point of view) to identify who is looking at the site.
I have no interest in identifying individuals or anything like that, as my company targets large institutions. If I know that someone from that institution has been reviewing my site, if would give me more confidence in having a follow-up conversation with them.

So is there a way of figuring this out?

Are you considering cold calling organisations because someone from the organisation visited the site? Bear in mind most will be sitting behind multiple firewalls, proxy servers etc so you may find the organisation but not the individual or even the business unit.

I'm not sure this would go down too well with the organisations - no one likes being cold called and people generally don't respond well to it.

If a website ever contacted me because I viewed their website it would be the last contact they ever have with me....

Yeah - same here. You need to be careful about how you use information such as that collected in web server logs.

No I am not going to be cold calling organisations on the basis of a visit to my website. It would be to renew contact with people I have previously had discussions with. I would be dealing with a small number of large organisations, and in particular a certain department in such organisations
I would not refer to the fact that I noted their interest from visiting the website, as I know this would peev a lot of people.
Thanks for the help - I'll try out the suggestions.

Yeah, using ripe.net is a good start.

I just went to , copied my IP from that site, then went to www.ripe.net and searched for my IP in the box in the top right, and it brought up a page with my company details...

There might be software out there that will do this automatically for you?

Your webhosting provider should have a free analysis tool (in my case its awstats). Otherwise, you can use statcounter (google it) - I find it very useful.

Your hosts stats solution should give you all the basic info - www.statcounter.com is an excellent service, run by an Irish lad, or try Google analytics (also free).

statcounter is fantastic and you get extra when you pay a little. I'd advise you to use that one anyway. Extra bonus cause its an irish lad!

@daves: What extra features do you find useful with the paid version? Have just been using the free one for the last while..
