I remember the bail in in Cyprus in 2013 where as far as I remember depositors with over 100k were hit. AFAIK it was kinda formalised since with BOI and AIB taking steps to comply in 2020. In light of the current situation I'm curious does anyone know exactly what the current status is - Is it haircuts for depositors for anything over 100K or is it lower than that?
Yes, but banks are obliged to issue debt instruments which can be bailed in ahead of vanilla deposits now. This wasn't mainly the case ten years ago.
Remember Cypriot deposits were hit before the current EU regime (BRRD and SRMR) came into effect in 2014.
Personally I see very little risk to retail deposits even >€100k per institution. I'm just a semi-informed guy on the internet though so take that for what it's worth.
