You are aware she will get maternity benifit for six months? Also a quaterly payment that is ment to assist you with child care. Roughly around 260 per quater.
If you can't survive she will just have to go back to work and put the baby into a cresh.

We don't know that for sure given the info posted. It depends on her PRSI contribution records. Anyway see here for details of the schemes mentioned above and some others that may be relevant.

Hi,
You will really be pushed financially with only one wage and high rent combined with how expensive babies can be especially the first year or so. Have you actually crunched the numbers to work out the difference between your partners take home pay and childcare? in most areas there are Mothers who provide childcare in their home which often (but not always) work out cheaper than créches.
Best of luck with everything

I would suggest that you don't make any such assumptions about what your personal or job situations may be towards the end of the year. Maybe things will change with her job or maybe your job will hit difficulties and you'll be glad her job is still open. In any case, and given enough PRSI contributions, unless she indicates that she intends to return to work you will lose out on maternity benefit. If it were me I'd state intention to return, get the benefit and then review the situation a few weeks before the return date. I don't know of any particular supplements but if you are on one income only you could improve your tax situation somewhat if you were to marry. Obviously, crunch the numbers and reduce your outgoings to put yourselves in a stronger position. And babies aren't expensive if your willing to accept 2nd hand stuff from friends, family or freecycle/jumbletown people.

Totally agree, it would be wise to absolutely indicate to employer the intention to return to work, the procedure of written notice etc. is important, good information on both SW and Citizens advice. Avail of maternity benefit and if you do decide it best that she does not return to work apply for tax refund. As also stated start to plan now and avail of items from friends and family, people are always delighted to 'sponsor' a child in this way. We pass on good clothes and toys to other members of our family and vice versa. Look on money makeover and see if there are areas of your finances that you could clear up now before the little one arrives. Good luck with all.
