I would suggest that you don't make any such assumptions about what your personal or job situations may be towards the end of the year. Maybe things will change with her job or maybe your job will hit difficulties and you'll be glad her job is still open. In any case, and given enough PRSI contributions, unless she indicates that she intends to return to work you will lose out on maternity benefit. If it were me I'd state intention to return, get the benefit and then review the situation a few weeks before the return date. I don't know of any particular supplements but if you are on one income only you could improve your tax situation somewhat if you were to marry. Obviously, crunch the numbers and reduce your outgoings to put yourselves in a stronger position. And babies aren't expensive if your willing to accept 2nd hand stuff from friends, family or freecycle/jumbletown people.
