AVC for 2015

Hopefully someone who's actively involved with income tax compliance will know the answer to this...

Say someone has already submitted their 2015 return but has scope to make an AVC of €1,200 for 2015 (one can do this and get tax relief on or before mid-November). Can they make the AVC and simply amend their 2015 return thus generating a refund of €480?

I was always under the impression that it was easy enough to make an adjustment as long as it was before the deadline. Maybe one of the practitioners will confirm?
