Foiled by alarm. They tried to get in the back door in broad daylight
by inserted some metal object to jimmy the lock.Lets be careful.
What experiences have other posters had?

partner turned alarm off at 6.30 to go to work. House broken into at around 7. he used our garden sheers to jimmy the window and walked around down stairs with it. My wake up alarm must have scared him off thank god as i was upstairs with our then 7 year old and a new born.

jack2009 that's a very scary story.

Two breakins on my road in last couple of months. One person left alarm off as it was atrocious weather & they thought the wind would set alarm off anyhow. Came back at 6.30 pm from 1 hour trip to shops to find front door (pvc 5 point locking) kicked in & house ransacked. Other person left alarm off as another family member due in shortly and back door was kicked in. In both cases it seemed as if house was being watched.

Whatever happened to Neighbourhood Watch, it seems to be gone altogether?

You also need to be careful if you are availaing of alarm discount on your household insurance policy. If so and the alarm is not on when the house is broken into you may have your claim turned down.

House broken into with me in it last July, one Saturday night at about 1am.

One person was trying to force the front door with a screwdriver while the other was trying to break in the front window (brand new apple laptop on the kitchen table)

I was in, so no alarm. Heard the front door open, so roared down a string of obsceneties. Grabbed handbag and gym bag from the hall.

Drive a nice car, so were after the keys of that apparently, which they did not get because I scared them off by being agressive. Between changing the locks, handbag, etc, there was over 2.5k damage.

Insurance paid out even though alarm was no on because I was in house.

Scary stories. May I suggest a big loud dog ? If appropiate obviously, but i believe theyre a much better detterent than any alarm.

Have a big loud dog in back garden - didn't deter thief/thieves before Xmas around 6pm.(may have fed him). House was definitely being watched as we arrive home at 6.30pm.
Broke in through back door - again new PVC door easily shimmied with a screwdriver.Stole Gold/Cash - nothing else.Noticed few weeks later markings on frame of front door which they obviously tried on a separate occasion.
Didn't have alarm at time but do now and is always set on leaving house.

Do people turn the alarm on when they are in the house? Ours doesnt seem to allow this....

also watch out for burglars who remove the payne of glass from its frame....happened to me last year....they didn't even make a noise, proximity alarm went in the hallway...scared them off....

I think your alarm should allow this - you usually set it slightly differently than when you're going out, (for example, maybe you key in a different code). It's called a partial zone setting (or something, sorry, can't remember exact term) and basically it only alarms the exterior of your house, so you can move about inside without the motion / pressure detectors setting off the alarm.

But you'll know all about it if you open a window or the back door without turning off the alarm first (as I know from ear shattering experience when I forgot to turn it off myself).

Check your instruction book, or if your alarm pad has a door/lid there may be short instructions there (there are on mine).

What type alarm have you got installed ? You are looking for a part set on the alarm. This turns on the windows and doors but turns off the motion detectors for when your in the house.

Always best to have a motion detector installed. Most windows are glazed from the outside making there job of taking the glass out alot easier.

We bought the eircom keyfob for € 60 and it allows us to set the alarm remotely , usually from upstairs or outside when leaving house .

It sets the windows , doors and motion sensors .

They are handy for old people to have but not very secure the keyfobs off there systems. If some one was to get hold of it they could disarm your alarm without knowing your code. With the new HKC secure wave keyfobs you have to enter your code for them to work. They have a duress code also so if you where forced to turn the alarm off this way it works.

Apparently even if you do not take the insurance discount and have an alarm you will not be covered if there is a break in and the alarm wasn't activated.

My house got broken into on Thursday afternoon while I was at work. My French door was pulled off the hinges, even though the main part of the door was still bolted. Alarm went off so thankfully it was a smash and grab. Does anyone have any ideas about how to protect french doors?...the door was bent backwards and the thieves just slipped in...
As am living on my own am very disturbed by the whole thing

The only way is to fit shock sensors on the frame of the door that will activate as they are trying to break in. Alarm are only a deterrent but if they want to get in they will.

If you dont have the alarm on the policy they cant use this as a reason for not paying out. If you have the alarm on the policy and it is not set they are in there right not to pay. If you get an alarm installed today to EN50131 standard and dont have a maintenance policy on the alarm after the first year they can refuse your claim because your certification only lasts a year unless you take out a maintenance contract on the alarm. All within there rights i am afraid.

I had this out with my insurance company only two years ago because we are very lazy on the alarm setting. I put it to them that if I didn't mention an alarm (and therefore did not get the discount) and had a break in - what the position would be. The lady told me that if an alarm is detected upon inspection (whether it was on the policy or not) we could end up losing a claim for not having it operational...... Is there anybody out there who knows for a FACT what the position is.

Maybe I was given wrong information from the Insurance Company. It was only over the phone and have nothing in writing.

For a fact she is wrong if she told you that. They can only refuse to pay out if you have the alarm on the policy and it is not turned on, or up to the standard you are claiming the alarm to be e.g EN50131.
