Are professional fees tax-deductible?

My wife retired from farming in Nov 2007 and our son took over the farm on a lease from her. She had to wait until April 2008 when my son fully-qualified before she began receiving a pension under the Farm Early Retirement Scheme.

There were a lot of professional fees involved: accountants, lawyers and agents accredited by the Dept of Agriculture, etc. All these were compulsary requirements of the ERS, and you can be sure their fees took advantage of that fact!

To what extent can any of these fees be set against income, either (a) in her last year of farming (b) her pension or (c) her rental income from the farm?

All comments appreciated.
