Appropriate use of personal mobile phone number

I definitely dont agree with the text from your colleague, especially if you know him well enough to know he wasn't joking.

But just a couple of questions :
You smention that you sometimes work from home. If work dont provide you with a company mobile, and no-one has your home number, how can they contact you? Have you routed your work phone to your home phone, so you are only incommunicado for the journey home?

Also, this day, you mention you left the office early. I presume that means you had a few hours more work to do - i.e it wasnt out of hours. How would your colleagues contact you if you hadnt given your mobile phone out?

It sounds like the setup isnt very formal. If you are allowed to work from home, work should provide some way of contacting you, which does not involve your personal mobile phone.

I made contact with my superior today and have asked them to speak with my team member in relation to the text.

I've also asked them to make it clear that I am not obligated to answer my personal mobile phone outside of work hours if I am not working.

When working from home, I am incontactable by phone normally and only contactable by email. It's only in the case of an emergency that they have used my mobile phone as I'm dealing with work in a real-time situation with my online access.
 
I had a similar situation to mo3art recently whereby I was using my personal mobile to text colleagues advising them of work related matters to assist them. This was then expected even though they knew my phone was personal and like you, one day when I didnt answer/text etc they got particularly annoyed and aggressive. I put my hand up and say I gave them bad habits by doing this in the first place but then in no uncertain terms explained to them that I was helping them when using my own goodwill and if they wanted it to continue work had to pay for my phone. This did not go down well, some people just take liberties and things become common practice after a while. The boundaries must be set from the start, I am glad you said your piece. No one has any right to send a text to you in a rude manner. Needless to say, my phone is still not paid for in work and I no longer text anyone in work. Lesson learned.
