Approached by headhunter - legitimate?

Hi

Our chief exec resigned this week following differences with our new owner. Within 2 days of this, I was rung by a retail consultancy asking if I was interested in talking to them about a move to an un-specified new role.
I had never heard of the retail consultancy before, but they have a web presence, albeit VERY limited.

Does this sound like a recruiter striking whilst there is potential turmoil in the business, or the new owner testing the loyalty of existing staff?

I would always assume such a call was genuine but protect against the possibility that there is something sinister behind it.

Go meet the Headhunter. Tell them that you are very happy in your present job and that the departure of the Chief Executive might create an opportunity for you. However, you are always interested in hearing what is going on in the market. Don't be critical of the new owners. Don't disclose any confidential information about the departure of the Chief Executive.

If they are interested in you and they have a genuine opportunity, tell them that you will only give further consideration to the position after they have disclosed the identity of their client.

Could it be the ex-CEO recruiting at arms length?
