My son was updating his cao last night and wanted to add nursing, but there was an * (can't spell it) and he said that these courses were closed. I thought you could change the cao up until July 1st...
Does anyone know anything about this.

It's an asterix.
Some courses have other requirements besides points, and you might need to go through other selection - some of these are PE teaching, Art courses and so on, so you need to apply for them in the first round in order to go through the full process. They are usually identified in the CAO booklet or in the college prospectus.
I'd imagine there might be interviews for places on nursing courses? That's how they did it before it became a college course.

Do you think he could still apply, and maybe contact the hospital/matron to see if there are interviews taking place.

The Director of Nursing would not have any influence here and rightly so. Nursing is a hughly popular course and more so now as you have the candidiates using it to get into medicine down the line. This candidiate would never have considered nursing up to now.

He actually had thought of nursing, but 'peer pressure' being what it is, he didn't want to be seen to want it...
After much discussion, the penny has dropped, and he realises that his pals will all do their own thing and he has to do his. He is considering psycatriatric nursing (thinking it more masculine) but will also consider general.
It took a lot to get him out of the idea of people laughing at him doing nursing.

Nursing is a restricted entry course. Afaik, it's something to do with interviews/garda vetting/vaccinations, which is why the late deadline does not apply to it. He might be able to transfer from another course before the transfer deadline, provided he has the points, but nursing is quite low.

Would he consider nursing in N. Irl or the UK? UCAS have "clearing" in August where they attempt to fill places. They accept applications from new applicants at then as well.

afaik UCAS accept all applications to 30 June (after the closing date) with the caveat that some colleges may not accept these late applications.

There should be no reason for not being able to change to Nursing before the 1st July. There is no interview for Nursing for those who are not mature students. The garda vetting, vacs etc all take place after the places have been offered and accepted. Psychiatric nursing certainly does have more males that the other branches of nursing but I would strongly recommend that your son tries for whatever he really wants. There are males studying general nursing also and it's not a big deal anymore.
