Hi

As all have said I hope I have posted to the right forum.

Just wondering does anyone know where to go to ask about rights as a field engineer.

I live 69 km from work and travel all the time.

I have a commercial company vehicle and do approx 1,000 km a week.

I have been asked to pay towards the fuel expenses I incur driving to work even though I sometimes go directly to other locations sometimes saving the company fuel expenses due to my proximity to the location I have been sent to.

Hoping someone has some advise

Thanks in advance

Are you a member of a trade union?

Am I correct you drive about 700km a week to and from work and then drive 300km exclusively for work?

On the face of it I think it entirely reasonable that you contribute something.

The Revenue has strict rules about the use of company vehicles, based on annual mileage - your employers have no option but to comply & this means you paying your part.

Droileen, as the OP has a commercial vehicle, i guess he is paying the 5% BIK, so there is no milage requirement.

Bigmac, your private milage to get you from your home to your main place of work is costing your employer a fortune, and it is reasonable in todays climate for him to ask you to pay for some of this.

As Redbhoy says your contract of employment may state that your employer will pay for all fuel costs...in this case you have some negotiating power...but not a lot.!

I'd simply put a case to your employer reflecting a fair play approach. Accept that you are liable for the cost of your commute, but ask that you be paid (or allowed as set-off) notional mileage if you attend at a site less than 69 km from your home.

The employer might counter that you are actually saving money if you are assigned a job close to your home, and it's a fair argument, but present your case and see how it goes.
