Anybody reconsidering their travel plans to the States?

Yes

But I kinda know I’m not going to cancel it. It’s almost paid for. I really can’t take the hit financially. But it bothers me.

Had a plan to visit next year for 3 weeks...that's been shelved, Trump in general and not specifically to the Iran bombing

Have plans to head back to the States to finish off our American road trip odyssey but when Trump got re-elected, Mrs C announced, well that's that for the next four years.
And apart from Trump, the cost of a road trip has gotten very expensive compared to pre covid trips We've taken

What's going on?

I think the worry is that Iran, well-known sponsor of various terrorist organisations, might have occasion right now to be a bit cross with the US, and might look kindly upon a terrorist organisation that sought to strike at the US or at US interests in one of the ways that terrorist organisations have traditionally employed for this purpose such as, oh, I don't know, bombing a US airline or a flight to the US.

I am due to go in 3 weeks for the Katie Taylor fight, feeling very uneasy about it.
I would be €1k out of pocket but oddly I feel quite comfortable with writing it off....

I can't imagine the statistical risk of getting caught up in such an incident is too high. The usual cliche that you've a bigger risk of being killed or seriously injured in an accident en route to Dublin Airport applies here too.

I would say check the fine print of your travel insurance and have a full understanding of what is and is not covered by it before you travel.

I have not bought it yet, that was this weeks task - this trip was only booked in the last 2 months, very last minute everything which is not my normal way of doing things at all. (deals made in haste, oft repent at leisure.... yes Dad I know!!!)

So insurance at this point is basically to cover us medically, given what is happening nothing else will be covered.

Stuff like this also putting a lot of people off.

Irish passengers travelling to the US are being warned to delete social media apps from their devices if they have been openly critical of President Trump online. Cybersecurity experts say people travelling to the US risk being detained or turned away at airports if they expressed anti-Trump views on social media. There are also fears phones can be cloned by US immigration officials, who will then be able to access devices remotely.
The US president’s executive order for “enhanced vetting” during his second administration has prompted increased scrutiny at US borders, with more visitors having their devices and social media accounts checked.

That is not a problem for me, I comment on nothing on social media about these issues (gaza / immigrants blah blah just show me cat pictures please)

I also declared all my social handles on my Esta as well and I am not part of any unquestionable groups on whatsapp either.

Safety wouldn't really worry me - as others say if we were worried about our safety we'd never get in a car, but I am in the same position as many here that I have no desire to visit America whilst Trump is in power for a variety of reasons.

The first is that I have very little political power, but where I spend and invest my money is the one choice I can make. I would see visiting America as very much me saying, "I'm good with all this......"

The second is I know how I will feel when I see people wearing trump T shirts about the place and when i see their news on TV - I won't enjoy being there. I was there in 2024 pre election and the 5 year old kids in MAGA hats, dressed by their parents triggered me then. It will be worse now!

The third is - if you want isolationism you can have it - but what you can't have is the good bits of isolationism and the good bits of being globalist.

Tough dilemma is travel is already booked but I wouldn't let safety be driving the decision.

I really would like to be spending my money elsewhere but Katie Taylor is a big hero of mine, I was very lucky to be at the first fight she had in MSG and very privileged to be in a position to go again.
Fly out Friday morning and home Sunday evening, very much a case of get in and get out.
