Anonymous Letters Wont Go Away

Just wondering if anyone can offer advice. A friend of mine, his family is being harassed by an anonymous person saying distasteful things about him and we are wondering how to catch the culprit if the police won't help.

Some background:
Letters were initially hand delivered to the friends house for a few years saying repetitive, distasteful things about him Sometimes the letter was addressed to him, other times it the letter was addressed to his wife. But the letters were always about him. Same stuff.
Then his eldest brother who does not even live or socalise in the area got a similar letter posted to his job about his partner and how much of a ...she is.
Then the eldest brother's partner got posted a letter to her new job, which not many people even know where she works, saying distasteful things about her.
Now my friends daughter is getting the letters to her job about her dad.


Once my friend put up a surveillance camera, the letters started being posted. Every letter comes with different spelling mistakes, the change of handwriting changes the more they right and we think this is just a ploy.

The gardai said they cannot do much. They spoke to the post man and he said they can stop sending them but they wont be able to tell where it came from as I think there is 2 or 3 parcel centers, There is no An Post mark on the stamps.

We dont know if the person is local to the area they live in, but this is most likely. Does anyone have any advice ?

This is going on years, sometimes the letters are months apart. Other times they are weeks. I would have thought that An Post scan every envelope for recording purposes ?
 
Why a fake/visible.. ? a real/hidden camera would have been better so you actually catch the person.
But yes, throw them away, unopened. People like this will give up if they see they are not getting any reactions.
 
As others have correctly said, chuck them in the bin without opening.

Most people are inherently decent, there's a small minority who are just rotten to the point of foulness, you just can't see it though but it's there within them, spoiled and rancid and constantly churning with spite and malice.

The power they seemingly have over you, to ruin your day evaporates when you ignore these letters and don't give them a second thought.
 
Sure what good is a camera when it's the post person delivering them!

For those that listen to soon departing Joe he did a re run lately of a similar problem going on for years in I think Loughrea and they have been unable to get to the bottom of that. It's a difficult one, every suggestion was tried and nothing worked.

This sounds the same.
 
Could you hire a private detective?

I am not sure what they could do but it's worth a try.

Could you ask a handwriting expert to look at them to see if there are any clues? They would be able to tell you for example, if they were all written by the same person disguising their writing.

And do not throw them away. If you don't want to open them fine. But keep them as evidence.
 
This could well be a disgruntled family member or relative, close or distant.
Pay to extract DNA evidence from the letters and get all family members to give a DNA sample.
DNA analysis could pin point the culprit or indicate a likelihood that the person is related to you.
Or whichever family member refused to give a DNA sample might be the one!

One step at a time. The evidence from the letter and one family member - a child of the parents who are being targeted, would be enough to rule out the family. If it turns out to be from the family, which is quite possible, then decide what to do.

What law has been broken though, certainly feels like their should be a law against such malicious behaviour just not sure what it is?

I would seem to fall under stalking and/or harassment as per the Criminal Justice Act 2023: https://www.stalkinginireland.ie/am-i-being-stalked.

If the identity of the person was known it may be possible to get a Restraining Order:

So this person knows how to use Linkedln. Looks like he's afraid to send direct anymore cos he thinks you might be checking delivery. I would suggest your mate is winning the battle.
 

The particularly nasty and upsetting part of this is sending the letters to people's jobs, sounds like an absolutely horrible and nasty person

Hope karma gets them.
