All,

Can anyone advise please

My wife worked for An Post from 1979 to 1984

I just checked pension contributions with revenue and the contribution she made with An Post doesn't count towards old age pension

Can anyone advise if she is entitled to a pension from An Post

She probably paid class D or class B while she was employed by an Post. She should check her Prsi record to see if these contributions are on her record.

Assuming that they are, she would then be entitled to a pension from an Post.

The An Post Pensions Department telephone number is +353 (1) 705 7600. This number is for general inquiries and can be used to reach the customer service team, which can then direct you to the pensions department.

You can also write to them at An Post Customer Services, General Post Office, O'Connell Street Lower, Freepost, Dublin 1, D01 F5P2.

She should be entitled to a deferred pension at 60 however the only way to find out is by contacting them directly.

Why is this? After how many years of service were you entitled to a deferred pension from An Post upon leaving service in the 1980s?

Many thanks for all your replies, see following contributions from my welfare

1979-80 (35B)
1980-81 (52B)
1981-82 (49B1)
1982-83 (52B)
1983-84 (39B1 & 13D1)
1984-85 (8D1)

Many thanks again

Those contributions indicate that she will qualify for a pension from an Post for all that period.

Will she be short of 2080 reckonable contributions at age 66 ?
Has she reached age 66 ?

@S class

Are you sure that someone with less than 5 years actual service would qualify for a deferred or preserved pension upon leaving service in the 1980s? This surprises me!

Pre the 1990 pension act, there was no statutory entitlement to a pension in leaving a job. Would be nice to hear of an employer who did allow pensions for leavers.

This is from the eircom pension booklet.
A person with 2 years service can have a preserved pension.
The an post scheme is probably the same.

Up to 1984 the employer for eircom and an post workers was the Dept of P&T.

Former civil servant here.

If I remember correctly from the civil service at the time (An Post was probably similar) once you had 2 years done it was locked in.
If you had less than 2 years service you got a refund of your contributions.

I don't know if there was a possibility of getting a refund of pension contributions if you left subsequently.

Just to add to the information for others, I recently tracked down a pension for my partner who had worked in P&T and subsequently Eir.

I contacted Pension Authority who told me to contact PeoplePoint/NSSO @ pensions@nsso.gov.ie Their response is copied below:
Thank you for contacting the National Shared Service Office. As you worked in Telecom Eireann now Eir your pension is looked after by Eir. If you had resigned before 01/01/1984 vesting day your pension would have been looked after by us.

Then I contacted Eir - eirpensions@aon.ie
They couldn't have been more helpful. They responded straightaway and requested details e.g. DOB etc. Then within 3 days they provided a pension statement with full details of entitlement of a pension at 60.
