Am I entitled to a reason for not being considered for a position

I sent off an email application for a job last week and received an email back saying after consideration I had been unsuccessful. I wrote back and thanked them for taking the time to consider me and if he could let me know why I had been unsuccessful so I could build on it going forward. Have had no reply after 4 days now. Am I entitled to an explanation of exactly why I was turned down?
 
In my experience, few, if any organisations provide this kind of feedback and I don't believe there is any obligation on them to do so.
 
The company has no obligation to give you a reason. A lot of companies have a huge amount of applications for positions at the moment and its impossible to give everyone a reason for not being considered for the position.

For example we had over 100 applications for 1 position - in the end we had to wittle it down to the people who had prior experience
 
If a teacher applies for a job and is refused that teacher has the right to ask for the notes pertaining to his/her interview as written down by the 3 interviewers. Interview boards are under obligation to provide them when requested.
 
Paddybloggit is correct regarding interview boards, but that only applies to actual interviews. The op didn't get to the interview stage. Companies are entitled to shortlist without having to offer any explanation as to why a person is not shortlisted.

Mis-read the OP's situation .... same applies in teaching.

If we get xx amount of applications we set our criteria before we go through CVs .... when whittled down we invite ppl to interview. Those that are interviewed are entitled to see whatever notes were taken about them during the interview.
 
Some organisations (rightly or wrongly) are reluctant to give our reasons in writing, in case the applicant may make a fuss or claim discrimination. You might be more successful with a quick call asking for a verbal update on the reasons for refusal, to help your career.

Did you meet all the criteria specified in the advert?
 
Well, it was in retail management. They said no experience was required in retail, but management experience was an advantage. I have two years management experience, so I had the criteria specified.
 
Its very rare to get any answers in retail, let alone honest one. Contacting them for a reason may seem pushy and could tarnish any chance of being considered for future jobs they may be recruiting for.
