First off, I live in Texas. I completed a Masters degree from an accredited state university, found a professional career which I worked for nearly three years, and then the economy collapsed. During the time I was employed, I saved plenty of money and have am amount of money in the bank. I am currently collecting unemployment benefits and understand I will not qualify for general assistance (welfare) while receiving unemployment benefits. What if the economy continues to deteriorate even after my unemployment benefits are exhausted and I cannot find work anywhere?
I worked with a Fortune 500 company before the economy died and have am impressive resume with a bachelors and masters degree, both earned with a 4.00 GPA and loads of academic honors and awards backed up with plenty of work experience, both professional (post-graduate) and unprofessional (jobs while in college). My plan is to continue looking for a job that pays well enough to pay my bills. If that doesn't work, I can get a night job stocking groceries (40 hours per week) and a day (up to 40 hours per week) doing some menial task, such as hanging out by the day labor camp. If I cannot even find this in our miserable economy, I will be forced to either live under a bridge or collect welfare. This considers the economy continues to decline for the next two to three years and the job market shrivels to nothing.
Will I have to wait until my savings have been exhausted before I qualify for welfare? Will the state look into my banking account before granting welfare?
