I have an AIB personal current account. I would like to add my spouse to it so that in the event of my death my spouse will get any savings that I have in my account. I heard that with AIB, I cannot add another person to my account and make it a joint account and in the event of my death all money in my account any money in my account will get locked out with no one able to access it.

I was told that I have to create a new personal account with my spouse added to it.

Any one in similar situation? What are the options?

It seems a lot easier to open a joint account.

Then over time move over your various direct debits and standing orders.

According to the AIB website you can't convert an individual account to a joint account. Only option is to open a new joint account.

What will happen in the off chance that an AIB account holder pass away suddenly? What happens to the money in the account?

Is there any way the account holders children or spouse gets it?

As discussed here many times, if such an eventuality arises, IME, banks will allow the executor, on presentation of the will, their own id and the death-certificate to access funds for funeral expenses and to lodge cheques from insurance policies, death grants, etc.

In my view married couples should put everything through joint accounts both for current expenditure and savings.

Around the time of bereavement, no one needs the hassle of having to release locked funds.

There is no disadvantage around deposit protection as the guarantee for a joint account is exactly double that of a sole account.
