Hi All,

anyone have any views on agricultural land values in the askeaton (limerick) area in 1997? Would IR£4,000 per acre be a in or around the mark? Is there any objective information on land sales in the area for the time that would provide a good accurate average figure?

Any local auctioneers established since before 1997 should have this info in their archives. You could also try the archives of your local newspapers (should be in your local libraries) for reports on sales etc.

Have a look at the following report
[broken link removed]

1997 was just before the Celtic Tiger kicked in.

As you can see from the graph, a hectare of land was worth an average of €7,500 in 1997.
That's quite a bit less than the £4000 an acre which you suggested.

In 1997, land prices had hardly risen since the mid 1970's.
I know someone who bought 50 hectares in 1979, and sold in 1998, making hardly any profit (despite considerable inflation in the interim).

The graph gives the average story, Limerick could be higher (or lower).
